Enchanting and Cozy in Ise

For one night, I had the pleasure of staying at Hoshidekan. With a striking exterior, you find a lovely little lodge run by two locals, making it all work. The rooms are traditional with Tatami Mats, Art, Futons, and personal heating/cooling. The hotel also features a beautiful on-site garden and an excellent restaurant for breakfast. One can also find a cute on-site library and a personal Onsen. It's a great addition and mood, especially with the other historic sites of Ise.

Stay at a lodge on your way to Ise Shrine! You can stay at a registered tangible cultural property

You can have a valuable experience staying at a retro inn that is a registered tangible cultural property.
It is about a 10-minute walk from Ise-shi Station, on the Kintetsu ticket gate side, opposite the Shimomiya of Ise Shrine. This quaint inn, built 96 years ago this year, has a retro design that stands out on the street.
Although it is old, the owners seem to have maintained it with care, so we were able to stay comfortably. There are also many stylish restaurants in the area, and the owner will guide you to recommended restaurants, so you don't have to worry about dinner.
It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the Shimomiya of Ise Shrine, but if you walk while enjoying the townscape, it will be over in no time. Bicycles are also available for rental.
The friendly owners will answer all your questions politely and accurately. Highly recommended for those who want to stay in a retro old inn and those who want to enjoy a reasonable stay in Ise. It seems that it is cheaper to book directly with the inn than to book through various reservation sites.

Stunning stay at Hoshidekan in Ise

A friend and I had a wonderful stay at Hoshidekan. The building is an ancient 2 story Japanese house that has been in the family of the owner for 4 generations. The outside is stunning but the interior with it's inner garden connected by a bridge is really amazing. The hosts were so wonderful and helpful. The breakfast was really good and as we chose the Japanese option very traditional.
If you want a real and fantastic Japanese stay I really recommend this house.

Traditional, beautifully decorated and completely relaxing

My husband and I stayed at this charming hotel for two nights and found it to be an absolute oasis...the surroundings are traditional old style Japan..dark wood, a red bridge, a working gramophone, and lovely old magazine photos decorating the walls.
Our room was on the small side, but we had everything we needed. The bathrooms are located outside the rooms, but there are plenty of them so access was not an issue ( side note: the hotel was only half full and if it had been to capacity, the bathroom situation MIGHT have become a problem.)
The staff are just wonderful. I didn't catch the name of the male proprietor, but he spoke excellent English and went out of his way to make our stay comfortable. He took us all around the hotel and showed us the bamboo pipe with the water dripping through it...it makes as astonishing sound!
The hotel serves breakfast (Western or Japanese style) and it was well cooked and plentiful. There are two onsen style bathtubs and large shower rooms - perfect at the end of the day if you've been tramping all over Ise.
One of my favourite touches was the flag stand in the lobby....the owners post flags to indicate which nationality their guests are and when we checked out, the lovely man who runs the hotel called us a taxi and then stood outside waving goodbye with the Canadian flag to wish us well....what a lovely send off
I highly recommend Hoshidekan...very well done.

Overall Good

The rooms at the hotel stay very true to the expectation one might have of a very old building. The road can be heard through the walls, however, it's not too bad at night, and the staff was amazing. The garden stands up to the pictures, and the building is very beautiful (just be wary of being loud at night).
Location was rather amusing honestly, it's about 12 minutes walking to Ise station, and very close to multiple restaurants and a convenience store. The building itself is very old, yet is surrounded by a very modern area. There is an excellent pizza bar down the road towards the station that serves a specialty seaweed pizza, would recommend! It is run by one guy, and he's really awesome! Look for the pieces of wood in the window.
