First Time In Vieux Boucau
J.O.J and hungry the shuttle from Biarritz arranged by Atlantic Surf Lodge was straight forward and the driver was a legend, even stopped off at a near store so I could grab some food. I booked a week's stay package in Dormitory and was sharing with some cool guys that happened to become good surf pals. The room was clean and spacious I couldn't have asked for more out of a dorm. Opting for the Breakfast and lunch break deal worked out perfect. I could get a good tasty bite before my surf & pack my lunch to take with me for an after the surf snack. I didn't go for the dinner plan as I love to eat out and try different places but it always smelled so good. One night when my table got doubled booked at a nearby restaurant, the guys at the lodge served me up a great veggie curry and saved the night. I will be back again to get some more surfing tips from the boss Uli, even though I wasn't doing the surf packages he was always happy to help and did it with a smile even after my 50th question about the local breaks.

unused potential
First of all, I have to admit that I didn't have a terrible time at the Surf Lodge. The facilities are clean and it's close-ish to the beach (about a 5 minute bike ride away), however, Uli, the host, didn't really give the impression that he was happy about people staying there. It seemed he's bothered by any question and rather stays away from the guests. Might have been the late season speaking, but I wasn't really happy about that.
The rest of the staff of the hostel however was very friendly and kind and made us feel more welcome.
The website of the lodge states that people under 25 may not stay there. Since that was what we were looking for (not too much of a party place, people our age group), we were pretty surprised to find a family staying there (kids younger than 20) and two of the staff members being younger than 25. But that's not even a big deal.
The website also stated that the surf lessons a) were 2 hours long (they were more like 1,5 hours), b) that they included a video analysis (we got laughed at by the surf teacher for asking for the video analysis) and c) would focus a lot on theory (we got one theory lesson after explicitly asking for it in the surf teachers "time off"). So all in all I can only say that I'm very disappointed in the surf course and feel like I've thrown out money that I could have just spent on a rental, because even in the lessons the surf coach didn't care a lot about correcting our mistakes. Like in a previous review, it was more like supervised surfing (when the surf coach wasn't looking at his phone or chatting with other surf coaches) and I could have saved a lot of money had I just taken a rental board and wetsuit and went surfing on my own.
There also wasn't a drying room for the wetsuits, so chances are (especially in the mid and low season) that you have to put on wet wetsuits every day.
There is also no heating in the rooms, so be warned for those not-really-warm nights.
Another thing are the bikes. Uli makes sure that there is a handyman around, but the bikes are nothing like in the picture on the website. They're all pretty old. I was lucky enough to get a good one, but I saw what other guests had to deal with.
The rooms were pretty good. However, staying next to the bathroom is no fun since the walls are pretty thin.
The four cats in the hostel were a nice plus for me personally, but I can't remember reading about them earlier anywhere and if I were allergic, that might have been a rather unwelcome surprise.
To finish with a good thing: The food was pretty good and way better than I expected. And all in all I made the best out of my stay, but I'm not sure if I want to go back for the afore mentioned reasons. Like I said, it was far from terrible, but I'm definitely not taking another surf course with the ASL.
It's sad to see a place that clearly was constructed with a lot of effort to go to waste by not caring. There is a lot of potential in the place and I consider giving it another shot when the season is perhaps just starting and minds aren't strained yet. All in all: Go there, enjoy the food, hope for good company in the other guests, enjoy the surrounding (Seignosse/Hossegor and Biarriz are a must), but think long and hard about those surf lessons.

Not worth the money
Good food, nice lodge and garden. Besides that: A surf teacher that doesn't give you instructions (felt more like supervised surfing), poor equipment (wetsuits that almost fall apart, 8 surf boards for a group of 25 people). I was there for a week and will definitely never go back. Since we were short on surf equipment, we were asking for boards to rent, it took 3 whole days until we had them – the manager, Uli, does everything to avoid his guests. Anything that needs some extra effort or attention (like boards for everybody, as stated on the website): Just not feasible. You have to organize it yourself.
We made the best out of it and thanks to the great guests and rest if the staff still had a pretty good time. But I felt like I was throwing out money for poor surf lessons and a manager that doesn't at all care about his guests. Go there, if you’re a free surfer looking for a nice place to stay but not if you want to have proper surf lessons or holidays in a welcoming environment.

ISA surf licence coarse
stayed here to get my ISA 1 surf license and lifeguard degree. Was a very "surfy" place with nice bikes to use, ping pong, table football, near to the beach and skatepark. Overall perfect place to stay with teenage friends.

Chez Uli on se sent bien. Très bien. Il y règne une ambiance tellement zen et il nous permet de rencontrer des allemands des suisses des anglais ...les cours de surfs sont supers ...les repas sont extras... les logements très propres... c est notre troisième année chez Uli et on y reviendra encore .
